Oshogatsu is the Japanese New Year, a festive occasion marked by unique traditions and customs. Celebrated from January 1st to 3rd, it’s a time for family gatherings, visiting shrines, and enjoying traditional foods like osechi-ryori. Homes are decorated with kadomatsu (pine decorations) and kagami mochi (rice cakes), symbolizing good fortune. The holiday also features hatsumode, the first shrine visit of the year, and the joyous tolling of temple bells at midnight. It’s a celebration of renewal and reflection, deeply rooted in Japanese culture.
