The Carnival of Basel, known as Fasnacht, is Switzerlands largest carnival, celebrated in March. The festival begins at 4 a.m. on the Monday following Ash Wednesday with "Morgestraich," when the citys lights go out and lanterns illuminate the streets. Participants in elaborate costumes and masks perform Guggenmusik, a cacophonous form of music. Parades, satirical floats, and local delicacies contribute to the lively atmosphere. Basels Fasnacht blends tradition, satire, and community spirit, offering a unique cultural experience amidst its medieval architecture.
