The Carnival of Gion, known as Gion Matsuri, is one of Japans most famous festivals, held annually in July in Kyoto. This month-long celebration is renowned for its stunning processions of floats, called Yamaboko, which are elaborately decorated and pulled through the streets by teams of men in traditional attire. The festival originated in the 9th century as a purification ritual to appease the gods during a plague. Today, it features cultural performances, traditional music, and food stalls offering local delicacies. The vibrant atmosphere, rich history, and intricate floats make it a captivating experience for anyone looking to immerse themselves in Japanese culture.
