Gion Matsuri is one of Japans most famous traditional festivals, held annually in Kyoto throughout the month of July. Originating in the 9th century, it was established to appease the gods during an epidemic. The highlight is the grand parade, where elaborately decorated floats, known as yamaboko, make their way through the city. These floats are adorned with intricate tapestries and carvings. The festival also features numerous cultural performances, traditional food stalls, and a rich display of Japanese culture and history.
